We are deeply saddened by the death of Sir Richard Alston, one of Britain’s most important choreographers and a defining figure in the history of The Place and London Contemporary Dance School.
Richard first came to The Place as one of the earliest students of London Contemporary Dance School, returning as Artistic Director in 1994 and establishing the Richard Alston Dance Company as resident company. Across more than half a century, he made over 200 dances and profoundly influenced generations of dancers and artists through his musicality, craftsmanship and unwavering belief in beauty.
His influence remains woven into The Place and LCDS. Even in his final weeks, Richard was watching videos of our students rehearsing his dances, sending back detailed notes and encouragement from hospital.
