About Professional Classes
JOIN PROFESSIONAL DANCE ARTISTS IN THE STUDIOS AT THE PLACE AS THEY DELIVER WEEKLONG CLASSES:
AUTUMN 2024
MON 16 - FRI 20 SEP / PIP DUKE
The aim of my class is to give you a sense of moving joyfully, expansively, musically, with nuance, eloquence, power. The movement is underpinned by contemporary ballet, but not in a scary way, the point is that contemporary dancers feel good using some ballet to shift across the space. The class moves from somatic/yogic warm up, a few basic warm up exercises for the legs and feet, lots of three dimensionality, and then quickly towards moving through the space - it's good if you've warmed up a bit. The emphasis is on dancing combinations - more moving than getting ready to move - and on respect for everyone in the room.

MON 30 SEP - FRI 4 OCT / MALIK NASHAD SHARPE
‘LOOKIN’ LIKE AN ICON’
This is a dance workshop in-between the commercial and the contemplative, one-part technical, one-part experiential—and is built around the practice of self-actualisation. Seeking to become iconography, something that stands tall in the crowd, this workshop will rely both on dancing as a meditative practice, but also as an engine to feeling fully formed in dance and movement practice. Workshop participants can expect to engage with meditative practices, physical training and conditioning, and complex choreographic repertory work.
Be your own icon. Inspire the person inside of yourself. Externalise your fears, and let them drip-drip-drip onto the ground. May it nourish your body-mind-soul. You will sweat. And it will feel good.

MON 11 - FRI 15 NOV / JOSE AGUDO
Attack Release - The center of the body as the origins of dynamics. Level: Suitable for professional and vocational level dancers. Jose’s technique class is fast paced and aims to improve stamina through precise and simple movement patterns. The principles of the class are influenced by a diversity of traditional forms such as Kathak, Flamenco and martial arts, which are brought into a contemporary dance context. The initial warm up is followed by more complex movement material with a dynamic focus on the concept of ‘attack and release’. With a passion for rhythm, Jose often uses counts to influence the dynamic of the movement and spinning to engage the core. All of this work prepares the body to travel - exploring the broadest movement in space, whilst making fast, clean transitions from large to detailed.
About
Jose started his career in Andalusia where he began performing as a Flamenco dancer. Slowly the world of contemporary dance became more visible as he worked throughout Europe performing with Charleroi/Danses, Ballet de Marseille, T.R.A.S.H, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance and Akram Khan Company. As a rehearsal director and assistant choreographer Jose has worked on several creations for Akram Khan Company, including DESH, iTMOi, TOROBAKA, Until the Lions, Chotto Desh, London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony, and Sylvie Guillem’s farewell tour Life in Progress. In 2011, Jose started to study Kathak under Akram’s guidance. Finding many parallels between this training and his early studies of Flamenco, Jose reconnected with his roots and began to explore traditional forms in a contemporary context. As a result he created Silk Road (2017), which has toured in 6 countries to date, and Carmen (2020). Jose’s independent choreographic commissions include, Ki for Phoenix Dance Theatre and English National Ballet School; Selah for ZfinMalta Dance Ensemble; A Thousand Shepherds for ACE Dance and Music, later restaged with Cape Dance Company; Arctic for LCDS; Regnum for Festival International de Music y Danza de Granada; Glansvit for Norrdans; Bhaj for SEAD/Bodhi Project; SAM for Area Jeune Ballet; and For You – a film collaboration with London Mozart Players. In 2019, Jose choreographed the opening ceremony of the Davis Cup by Rakuten in Madrid. He is listed in the new edition of 50 Contemporary Choreographers, an international publication by Routledge. His new production of Carmen will tour from autumn 2021. He is developing a new full length solo base in the Hero With A Thousand Faces. During 2022 and 2023 Jose embarked in a new adventure diving into the world of the musical theatre. First as an Associate Choreographer for Cabaret at the Kit Kat club. Then choreographing the flamenco scene and performing as the character of Rico at Strictly Ballroom the musical by Baz Lurhmann.

We will warm up with strength and technical exercises focused on moving across the floor, low to the ground and upside down, building up to longer sequences. Usually we will practice running to find pleasure in moving with power, speed and agility. Through improvisation tasks that respond to practical, physical provocations we start to open our awareness into performance.

Vivian will teach on Thursday and Friday:
In the ‘Energy and Flow’ class we will start by discovering and developing our personal way of moving through improvisation and guided tasks and will then move onto set choreographic material based on floor work technique. We will work towards awaking body connections in order to play with the quantity and quality of our energy to find flow in our movement. We will practice body totality, presence as well as developing our strength. We will challenge the physicality of the body, as well as the exploration of rhythms and speed. We aim to find efficiency in movement, especially in moving in and out of the earth, clarity and details. Expression and creativity are key, as well as the connection with the group. And most of all we want to connect to the joy and passion of dance itself!

MON 10 - FRI 14 Mar / SAM VAHERLEHTO
Gravity, release, falling, and suspension are key elements in my movement practice, shaping my dance classes. Integrating Gaga principles, we explore deep body awareness and the pleasure in subtle weight shifts. Beginning with yoga-like movements to connect with different states of awareness, we then move into Cunningham and ballet exercises to explore body alignment. This helps participants build strength for suspension and pulling. Cross-floor exercises, inspired by Counter and Release techniques, focus on falling. The class concludes with sequences that blend these elements, encouraging dancers to express their individual artistic style and rediscover the joy of movement.
