As London Contemporary Dance School is based at The Place, you will enjoy excellent facilities that support your growth as an artist. We have 10 large dance studios, with sprung floors mirrors, and lots of natural light. You have access to the body conditioning room which has a range of equipment to support your education. There is a 288-seat theatre that presents over 200 performances a year, including festivals and special events such as Resolution, the UK's biggest festival for emerging artists. We have a specialist library where you have access to study space and resources, an Audio-Visual room with technical equipment you can hire for free and a busy Costume Department.
Studios
You will have access to ten dance studios. All the floors are sprung, some have wooden floors and some have a dance floor. The dance practice will often decide which type of studio you will be in. Nearly all the studios have pianos and amps in them for the musicians and all studios have a AV system in them. Two of our largest studios open up, transforming into a performance space which students use for to share their own choreographic works.
We also have two lecture spaces which are equipped with large screens and primarily used for lecture or seminar type classes.
The Theatre
We have a 288 seat theatre that presents over 200 performances a year, including festivals and special events such as Resolution, the UK's biggest festival for emerging artists and Family Dance Day. The theatre has a strong reputation for its international programming alongside supporting UK based dance artists and is a part of the European Dancehouse Network.
Library
Our library houses a collection of over 5000 books, DVDs, magazines and journals related to the fields of dance, performing arts, and culture.
All LCDS students are automatically members of the library and are able to borrow up to 10 books at a time, for study and personal interest.
The library also provides a place to work, with computers and desk space available. There are printing and scanning facilities available, as well as a private study room which you can book.
The library team offers academic support and advice, as well as helping you to gain access to online resources, such as digital journals and video archives, as well as other libraries across London and the UK.
Body Conditioning Room
Our body conditioning room includes a gym, consultation space and a treatment room. The Physical Support Team operate from the body conditioning room and you are able to use the gym space in your free time during building opening hours. The gym is equipped with five cardiovascular machines, free weights, functional equipment, two Pilates reformers and a Pilates ladder barrel.
Costume Department
The Costume Department is a multifunction space that includes a workroom and costume store. The costume team collaborate with in house and external choreographers, designing and constructing costumes for undergraduate and postgraduate productions. Alongside this, the team teach design and associated skills across the undergraduate course. The costume store is a resource that students can access for their curriculum-based projects via a loan system. It contains a variety of garments, accessories and props that have accumulated over the last 50 years. This means the stock contains a wide variety of past and present fashions, for example period tailcoats, 70's jumpsuits and present-day casual wear.
Audio Visual (AV) Room
Our AV room provides a range of equipment to support your learning and artistic practice. Some examples are cameras, laptops, sound equipment, projectors and theatrical lights. The equipment is available via an online booking system for short-term loans and free of charge. A full-time member of staff is available to advise on technical problems and support you. You can also watch, and download, video recordings of your live performances via a streaming platform.
