Quincey Kawahara
Quincey Kawahara is a dynamic and curious Asian-American movement artist based in London. Discovering her love of dance in Los Angeles, California, and now navigating new territories overseas, she is specifically interested in the inner workings of her identity and how this bleeds into her performance practices. Graduating from UCLA with a degree in World Arts & Cultures/Dance, she became particularly fascinated with the power of bodies as a vessel for communication—translating memories, histories, and stories that resonate across social and emotional boundaries. She is continuously researching how to become a more thoughtful performer capable of engaging with complex social and cultural issues and finding excitement through storytelling. Quincey is a graduate of the MA Dance: Performance programme at LCDS, where they were a member of the inaugural Cohort 01. During the programme they worked with project leaders such as Theo Clinkard, Jenna Jalonen, Hannes Langolf, Paleta, Benjamin Jonsson, AE Company (Aoi Nakamura & Esteban Lecoq), Edivaldo Ernesto, Horacio Macuacua, Jozef Frucek and Alexandra Reynolds, under the course leadership of Tom English, Tina Afiyan Breiova and Dr Andrew Sanger and working closely with individual mentor Maya Orchin. Quincey continued her relationship with the MADP programme through working as a Graduate Assistant following the completion of her studies. |
While working with course leaders Tom English and Tina Afiyan Breiova, and reinforced by many other practices shared over the course, I was able to reshape my relationship to failure. This shift in perspective has transformed my own practices and growth,--not only relinquishing the negative connotations around it but also allowing me to challenge my previous beliefs about my physical and psychological bounds.
