Composer Call Out for New Work by Choreographer Chandenie Gobardhan

Creative brief from the choreographer:
This commission is for the composition of an original score for a dance theatre work of up to 30 minutes in duration.

The work sits within an electronic and cinematic musical world, whilst drawing inspiration from themes of devotion, ritual, transformation, and emotional intensity. The score should support both intimate and expansive moments within the choreography, allowing space for atmosphere, tension, repetition, and physicality.

I am interested in a composer who can blend electronic composition with influences and textures inspired by Carnatic music traditions. There is also potential collaboration with a sarod player and vocalist, with live or recorded material being used as part of the compositional process and sonic palette.

The relationship between movement and music should feel immersive and emotionally responsive rather than purely illustrative. The work should hold both meditative and visceral qualities, with openness towards experimentation, texture, and layered sound design.

Work will be completed in a freelance capacity, and the composer will be required for a minimum 2-3 days onsite during the dance - creation period, with the majority of the work completed remotely.

Proposed Timeline
Initial musical sketch 3 mins: 27 - 31 May 2026 (Up to two composers will be invited for a zoom with choreographer and then to produce a short sample idea, for this each will receive a one-off fee of £110)

Final decision and work will commence with one composer from 4th June 2026

Feedback (on sample) & first revisions: w/c 8th June 2026
Full score development period: June 2026 – February 2027
Performances will take place 10–12 June 2027 at Sadler’s Wells East, Composer will be required onsite for some of the tech time, 7 - 10 June 2027.

The project includes a one-year licence period. Further usage/licensing terms will be discussed with the selected composer prior to contracting.

Additional Notes: At present there is no further budget for musicians/live recording beyond the fee.
