About RES27: Music and Dance with MANACAN

This workshop invites early-career creatives to explore MANACAN's approach to choreography through sound. As artists who compose their own music, MANACAN create from a place of instinct and raw feeling, using voice, everyday objects and found sounds to build sonic worlds alongside movement.

Through practical exercises, participants will experiment with generating sound as part of the choreographic process, exploring rhythm, texture and atmosphere as starting points for movement. Together, we'll investigate how sound and choreography can evolve alongside one another, rather than one simply leading the other.

Along the way, MANACAN will share insights into their collaborative process, creative practice and experiences of building an independent career in dance and music.

Please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely, as the workshop will include practical movement exploration.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

MANACAN is a South African dance and music company based in London, led by Ciara Baldwin and Nathan Bartman. They create original work rooted in their heritage, blending African and contemporary movement with self-composed music. Their work explores primal human experiences through movement, sound, and storytelling. Kaggen and the Moon is a solo dance-theatre work inspired by Khoisan mythology, following Kaggen, the ancient trickster, whose actions set in motion the cycle of death and rebirth. Through dance, live sound, and storytelling, the work explores transformation, forgiveness, renewal, and our connection to land, ancestry, and nature.
