About RES27: Lighting Design with Zoe Ritchie

Join lighting designer Zoé Ritchie for a practical workshop exploring the fundamentals of lighting design and how light can support, shape and deepen your Resolution performance.

Together, you’ll explore what light can communicate, how it can influence an audience’s experience, and how thoughtful lighting choices can add meaning to your work. The session will encourage you to think creatively about light as part of your choreographic and performance language, rather than simply something that illuminates the stage.

The workshop will also offer practical tools and approaches for collaborating with lighting designers and technicians, from communicating your ideas to developing a lighting plan that works within the realities of producing work at an early stage of your career. You’ll leave with a stronger understanding of what lighting can do for your work, as well as practical ways to approach lighting that are achievable within the time, space and budget constraints of a Resolution performance.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Zoé Ritchie is a Franco-British stage manager and lighting designer working between France and the United Kingdom for theatre and dance productions.

She graduated with a DNMADE in Lumière at Paul Poiret in Paris, before doing a Master of Arts – Light in Performance at Rose Bruford College in London. She worked as a lighting manager for the tours of Sucker Punch directed by Nathan Powell, Illegal Dance by Avant Garde Dance Company, 1983 by the Nova Company, Charlie and Stan by Told by an Idiot Company, for Je ne vous aime pas directed by Marianne Wolfshon at the Festival d'Avignon and for the Dance Umbrella Festival; as an associate of lighting designer Ryan Stafford on contemporary dance productions (2023, Noa Genazzano; Grown Men Keep Breaking My Heart, Kennedy Junior Muntanga & Joey Barton); desk and lighting assistant for First Touch directed by Jeff James; she did the lighting designs for Knocking on the Wall directed by Finlay Glen, Mère by Ambre Mation, Coiled up by Sababa Company, Let Us Raze You by Raze Collective, four touch three touch by Myriam Angela; and worked as a technician in various theatres in Paris and London.
