Behind the Scenes at The Place: A Week I'll Never Forget!

News Story
My week of work experience at The Place has been nothing short of phenomenal! I was incredibly nervous at first, but that quickly turned into excitement as I got to explore the behind-the-scenes world of The Place.
With a background in musical theatre and training in different dance styles, I've previously visited The Place as a guest performer in numerous shows. However, it was amazing to experience a completely different perspective and discover everything that happens behind the scenes, both before and after a production, through the 9 to 5 working day.
I wanted to take part in this programme to broaden my skills and knowledge of the performing arts industry. As a 17-year-old preparing for conservatoire auditions, exploring future industry opportunities and approaching my final year of further education, I knew this would be a valuable experience. Throughout the week, I had the opportunity to shadow several departments, from HR and Costume to Producing & Touring, as well as observe BA and MA dance sessions.
There were so many highlights! What initially felt like a week of observing and completing tasks quickly became something much more. Every department welcomed me into a safe, warm, and encouraging environment. It genuinely felt like having conversations with your fellow mates rather than simply shadowing professionals!
One of my favourite experiences was spending time with the Producing & Touring team. I helped organise spreadsheets, input information and check that all the auditionees' resources were ready for the choreographer. I also had a little look through some auditionees' CVs, which was fascinating! It inspired me to see the range of backgrounds, experiences and career journeys represented. It also reminded me just how small the performing arts world can be, as I recognised some of the same institutions I have been involved with.
I also had a brilliant time with Frances and Emma in the Costume Department. I got to explore, organise and learn more about how the wardrobe department operates. I asked lots of questions about the challenges and rewards of working in costume and even got a little taste of the experience myself! I also had a lovely chat with a third-year BA student, which gave me an insight into student life at The Place.
Another highlight was spending time with Jess in Development. I was particularly passionate about learning how fundraising works and discovering just how important funding is to keeping an organisation like The Place running. I even got to develop a campaign, formal letter and presentation exploring potential partnerships, focusing on nutrition for younger students taking part in Classes & Courses.
I was also lucky enough to sit in on a Communications team meeting, where I heard about upcoming social media content, LCDS and the promotion of next year's RESOLUTION festival. I even got involved in some promotional tasks! I also caught a glimpse of some exciting new designs and ideas. I know something big is coming... but sorry guys, my lips are sealed!
Beyond these experiences, I developed new skills across several other departments, including HR, Finance (where I learnt about Unit4), the Library, CAT, Theatre Technical and AV. From discovering new software and systems to understanding feedback processes, I gained a much greater appreciation of the many different roles that keep an organisation like The Place running.
Overall, this has genuinely been the best work experience I've ever had. I am incredibly grateful to everyone across the different departments who made me feel so welcomed, included and valued. A special thank you to the HR team for organising this opportunity. I've shared plenty of laughs, taken on meaningful tasks and received some brilliant advice about my future and the next steps in my journey.
