About Beatmotion – a workshop for professional dancers

Beatmotion – a workshop for professional dancers by Akeim Toussaint Buck

Beatmotion began as an idea for combining voice and movement and has developed into a comprehensive and sophisticated tool for dance and vocal music composition.

Deconstructing and reconstructing syllabic sounds, creating scores for performing improvisation. Seeking a deeper understanding of movement dynamics whilst communicating vocal sound to contrast or compliment the movement. This is all expressed and explored through modalities, e.g.: accompanying and sound effecting, staccato voice contrasted with a drone body and/or staccato body contrasted with drone voice, ping pong/call and response and more.

Inviting an acute listening, to connect with fellow performers, we create orchestral space and sound, unearthing fresh dynamics in one’s dance to play with. Leading with the embodied performer in mind, using both voice and physicality in a holistic way, bringing nuance to one’s performance practice. The intention is for joy and liberation, keeping an open mind and to challenge our artistic expression, as we embrace the inner child and learn to work with the inner critic.

Come and experience Akeim's work at The Place on Saturday 18 October, with An Evening with Ọkan.
