News Story

Our latest Alumni Story is with Margherita Giuliodori, a London Contemporary School alum who graduated in 2020.

Margherita is a Sports Massage and Soft Tissue Therapist based in East London.

In our Q&A with Margherita, we find out more about Dance Science, Soft Tissue Therapy, and what she hopes to do in the dance industry.

The Place: Tell us about yourself and what you’ve been up to since graduating from LCDS?

Margherita: I have been fascinated by the dance world for as long as I can remember. This passion brought me to London, where I further trained in contemporary dance at LCDS. Spending hours in the studio practising and connecting with dance artists raised an interest in the biomechanics of a moving body and its sensitivity to touch. After graduation, throughout the various lockdowns, I deepened my research and realised how much I value hands-on practices to encourage a truthful and deeper connection with our bodies. I enrolled at the North London School of Sports Massage, qualifying in December 2022 with a level 5 Diploma in Soft Tissue Therapy.

During my studies, I worked alongside the healthcare team of LCDS and Royal Ballet School providing soft tissue treatments to their students to support their recovery sessions. I am now based in East London, working and continuing my professional development as a Sports Massage and Soft Tissue Therapist.

The Place: What course did you do at LCDS and when did you graduate?

Margherita:I graduated in 2020 in BA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance.

The Place: What was a highlight of the course?

Margherita: The chaotic energy and loud laughter during 5 weeks of improvisation!

The Place: Why did you decide to pursue a career in dance science?

Margherita: Since massage was introduced in my study, it never really left. It contributed to developing a thoughtful relationship with my body expanding my awareness of weaknesses and strengths. What drives me is the idea of supporting dancers (and not only dancers) in having a sustainable and caring relationship with their vessels.

The Place: Would you recommend an LCDS course and why?

Margherita: Yes, I would. LCDS made me realize the vastity and the complexity of being an artist, but mostly, it gave me the opportunity to find a community of people that I support and admire. It is a journey that leads to endless possibilities, and it’s funny to look back at it now, a few years after.

The Place: What is next for you?

Margherita: Keep growing professionally and personally! Ideally, I would like to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team working with clients in the creative industry. The experience gained when practising at RBS, and LCDS highlighted the desire to be surrounded by artists, and being able to support them in their careers excites me.

Alongside working as a Soft Tissue Therapist, I’d like to go back to the studios and play around.
